The original purpose of this work was to present the existence theorems of the author in a more accessible framework than the original research papers. Chapter I1 has been devoted to this purpose. However, the uniqueness question is of equal importance and is very subtle and difficult.
Chapter I11 is devoted to this area, including the major uniqueness theorems of Dough and Feltus. The whole area of global solutions is rather difficult to motivate without a background in the classical treatments of partial differential equations (PDEs) ; chapter I presents a brief introduction to the classical methods and may be skipped by the reader already familiar with this field. Chapter IV is included to offer a brief guide to the literature of the applications of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and of numerical methods for solving this equation.
